Lord, give me a pain that I’m used to!
If we hurt the ones that we love the most, and they in turn hurt us the most. Then in order not to feel pain, you shouldn’t allow yourself to love. This justifies the Buddhist mantra of not allowing self to desire or want anything. This is very effective actually, because removing the element of neediness from the life of an individual, it frees you.
Not to need anyone = not to feel pain at not having or as a result of getting.
But I must say that if you need or want no one, you will have to accept the fact that you are likely not to be needed or wanted by anyone in return.
When you are in a relationship, sometimes you can’t understand why you feel so hurt for the most flimsy of reasons. When the expectations that you have of your mate are unmet, or there is direct confrontation and clash of wills, it can sting like a hot knife. It makes you wish you didn’t have to feel that way at all. You want to take yourself from the place where you are so vulnerable to that person’s action and inactions to where it won’t matter to you. Don’t want to need, don’t want to care. This is often the theme of a lot of contemporary pop and rock songs. Let me end this post then, with my pick of songs about causing or receiving pain.
Hinder – By the way
The Fray – How to save a life
Depeche Mode – a pain that I’m used to
Hoobastank – the reason
Crossfade – cold
12 Stones – running out of pain
Limp Bizkit – My Way
Limp Bizkit – Boiler
